How to use the Tabletop View and the Detail View of Notecards

How to Select Notecards in the Tabletop or Detail Views

Overview

Occasionally you may wish to do something with several notecards at once (e.g., print them, move them into a pile, link them to a source, or delete them). This can be done most efficiently from the Notecard Tabletop View (and printing can also be done if necessary from the Details View).

Step 1.

In the Tabletop View, mouse-over a notecard and click the checkmark in the upper left corner (it will turn green to indicate the selection). When the checkmark is clicked, it selects the notecard and a "Notecards selected" bar appears at the top of the screen, highlighting the number of notecards selected so far.

Step 2:

To select more notecards, click on their checkmark. The number in the "Notecards selected" bar is updated. To unselect a notecard, uncheck any checkmark. To unselect all notecards, click "X" on the floating bar.

Step 3:

Click "Print" in the "Notecards selected" bar to export just the selected notecards. Note: Printing multiple notecards can also be done from the Details View if necessary, by marking the checkboxes next to notecards in the left panel on that screen.

Click "Manage" to add the selected notecards to an existing pile, or to create a new pile containing that group of notecards.

Click "Link" to link the selected notecards to an existing source citation.

Click "Delete" to remove the selected notecards to your trash can. If you accidentally delete a notecard, you can click the "more options" icon button (three dots) at the top of the screen and select "Undelete" to recover it.

How to Create and Manage Notecard Piles

Overview

Notecards can be moved into piles when they have something in common so that you can work with them as a group. For example, you might create a pile of notecards that provide facts or evidence around one particular argument or topic (and later move that whole group of notecards into your outline under a single subtopic).

Instructions

Creating a pile:
The simplest method of creating a notecard pile in the Tabletop View is to drag and drop one notecard on top of another notecard. In the "New pile" window, type the name of your new pile and click the Ok button.

Creating a pile from many notecards:
To create a new pile out of a group of three or more notecards, mark the checkboxes on each of the notecards on the Tabletop View. (When selected the checkmark turns green.) The "Notecards selected" bar appears at the top. Click "Manage."

Adding a notecard to an existing pile:
Normally you can simply drag a notecard over a pile to move it. The target pile can be in its expanded state or not when you do this. You'll observe the number on the pile increase by one, letting you know the notecard has been added.

If the pile you want to add the notecard to isn't in view, you can mouse-over the notecard and click the "Add to pile" icon in the notecard's toolbar. Select the target pile from the list of pile titles to complete the move.

Merging one pile with another pile:
Notecard piles can be merged. Drag one notecard pile on top of a second notecard pile, then click Yes to confirm. The notecards in the first pile are added to drop target pile.
