Resources for Exploring Race, Racism, and Racial Identity: Parent Resources

Choose how much time you have each day to become more informed as step one to becoming an active ally to the black community: 10 minutes per day, 25 minutes per day, or 45 minutes per day. The website has inks to the learning resources and a schedule of what to do each day. Compiled by Autumn Gupta with Bryanna Wallace's oversight for the purpose of providing a starting place for individuals trying to become better allies.

Brenda Leaks, Head of School at Seattle Girls' School writes in an Opinion piece for the Seattle Times about the need for parents to "educate ourselves and have difficult conversations about racism with our children." Three things she recommends: (1) "Start where you are: Changing systems and figuring out your role — and the role of your children — can seem overwhelming. But things will only change if we all make an effort." (2) "Listen, talk, repeat: We frequently have conversations about race at our school, sometimes skillfully and sometimes not, but the important thing is that we keep listening, talking and trying to be part of the solution." (3) "Try to understand anger: Black people in this nation are hurting and angry. It takes courage to sit with someone who is angry, but it provides perspective on how we got to this difficult place — and how, together, we can move toward justice."
