Grades 11 and 12
All students starting Grade 11 or 12 in Fall Semester 2024 have two requirements for IB Language and Literature. Students will need to watch, listen, and read Beyoncé's 'Lemonade' visual album (explicit lyrics) and complete an analysis project. Students are also required to read Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez, translated by Gregory Rabassa, and then complete the related writing assignment. Chronicle of a Death Foretold should be read in August. See below for the IB Language and Literature Summer Assignment for both Juniors and Seniors. Questions? Email Gretchen Nordleaf

Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014) was a Colombian novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, and journalist. Known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America, he is considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language. García Márquez won the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. His literary style popularized magic realism, characterized by the infusion of magical elements into ordinary and realistic situations. His notable works include One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). Former Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos hailed him as the greatest Colombian who ever lived.
