In the summer of 2023 West Sound Academy had a One School One Book experience. All students, faculty, and staff read:
The Last Cuentista
by Donna Barba Higuera.
All grades had discussions and activities related to the book when we came back to school after the summer break, and then the author, Donna Barba Higuera, made an in-person author visit to the WSA campus on Tuesday, September 5, 2023!
Relocating to a new planet after Earth is destroyed, 12-year-old Petra Peña’s suspended animation fails during the 370-year journey, so when all the other children are mysteriously reprogrammed and the adults purged, Petra becomes the lone bringer of Earth's now forbidden stories and her grandmother's Mexican folklore to a changing humanity.
Author Higuera explores how story can awaken empathy, hope, and even resistance in an audience. This is the work of a true cuentista: gripping, at times poetic and lyrical, and full of storytelling magic.
